Contrary to what his creator intended or ever realized, Damian is aware of this and resents it. Moreover, he despises being subservient, hateful that even after his master's death he is still ruled by the command he was made to carry out: kill Jared Stark. Callous to begin with, he is further annoyed by the fact that others are not bound as he is, and takes perverse pleasure in manipulating people and acquiring power. Considering that his ultimate goal is to kill one man, his Machiavellian schemes and reluctance to deal with his target makes it seem as if he is avoiding fulfilling his final order.
