• Bruce Sterling's Workshop Lexicon
  I came across this literary freeware more than a year ago and still read through it from time to time, just to refresh my memory. It passes itself off as a lexicon for SF writers, but much of it applies to all genres.
• 'On Thud and Blunder', by Poul Anderson
  This essay on heoric fantasy was published quite some time ago, but much of it still applies today. It's not quite as general in focus as Bruce Sterling's Workshop Lexicon, but the bits about applying common sense, thinking through what you're about to write, and research can certainly be (and certainly should be) applied to any other genre.
